GRADE GUIDE · 316
316 is the marine grade of stainless steel: 2–3% molybdenum added to the 18/8 base gives it real resistance to chlorides — salt air, seawater splash, pool chemistry. In the Gulf, anything stainless within reach of the coast is normally specified 316 or its low-carbon twin 316L.

The molybdenum addition is what separates a balustrade that stays bright on a Dubai corniche from one that tea-stains in a season. 316 covers marine hardware, coastal architecture, chemical dosing skids, and process pipework where 304 would pit. It forms and welds much like 304, so fabricators switch between the two without retooling.
Off-cuts of 316 are worth hunting because the mill premium over 304 is significant — buying the exact plate or length you need, rather than a full sheet, keeps the molybdenum surcharge proportional to the job. For welded corrosion service, prefer pieces certified 316L or dual-certified 316/316L.
Near the coast, in pool areas or around chemicals — yes, without question. Inland and indoors, 304 usually does the same job for less.
Splash and spray, yes. Permanently immersed or in warm stagnant seawater it can still crevice-corrode; duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507 are the step up for immersion service.
Only the carbon cap — 0.03% instead of 0.08% — which keeps weld zones corrosion-resistant. Welded wet-service work should be 316L; the strength difference is minor.
