GRADE GUIDE · 304
304 is the general-purpose austenitic stainless steel — roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel — and the grade most stainless fabrication in the UAE runs on. It handles kitchens, balustrades, tanks, food contact and architectural work; it is not the grade for chlorides or salt air, where 316L takes over.

If a drawing just says "stainless", it usually means 304. The grade forms well, welds well and polishes well, which is why it covers everything from commercial kitchens and shop fronts to water tanks and pharmaceutical benches. Off-cuts make particular sense here: a repair plate, a bracket or a short pipe spool rarely justifies a full sheet or a six-metre length at mill minimums.
Two cautions from the workshop floor. First, 304 pits in chloride exposure — poolside, coastal or chemical work belongs on 316L or a duplex grade. Second, heavy welding on standard 304 can sensitise the heat-affected zone; if the part sees corrosion service after welding, the low-carbon 304L variant is the safer buy.
Inland and sheltered, yes — it holds up well in dry heat. Within a few kilometres of the coast, salt aerosol causes tea staining and pitting; 316L is the standard choice there.
Carbon. 304L caps carbon at 0.03%, which prevents carbide precipitation in weld zones. If the part is welded and then sees corrosion service, buy 304L; for bolted or machined work plain 304 is fine.
