GRADE GUIDE · 304L
304L is the low-carbon version of 304 stainless steel: carbon is capped at 0.03%, so weld zones stay corrosion-resistant without post-weld annealing. It is the default pick for welded tanks, pipework and any fabrication that gets wet after welding.

Standard 304 can sensitise when welded — chromium carbides form along grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone, leaving a path for intergranular corrosion. 304L avoids the problem by starving the reaction of carbon. That is the entire difference, and it is why welded process work, dairy and beverage lines and site-welded tanks are specified 304L rather than 304.
Strength gives up only a little: minimum yield drops from 205 to about 170 MPa, which rarely matters at the thicknesses fabricators buy. Most mills now dual-certify sheet and pipe as 304/304L, so an off-cut carrying both designations on its certificate satisfies either spec.
Whenever the part is welded and then exposed to moisture or chemicals — tanks, pipe spools, site welds. For purely mechanical or bolted work, plain 304 is equivalent and sometimes cheaper.
Yes. Dual-certified material meets the chemistry of 304L and the strength of 304, so it satisfies both callouts. The mill certificate shows both designations.
No — like 304 it pits in chlorides. For marine, poolside or coastal service step up to 316L, or to duplex 2205 where strength matters too.
