GRADE GUIDE · 2205
Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205/S31803) is a mixed austenitic-ferritic stainless steel: roughly double the yield strength of 316L, better chloride pitting resistance (PREN ≈ 35), and about half the nickel. It is the standard grade for desalination, chemical tanks and offshore process equipment across the Gulf.

The duplex structure — half austenite, half ferrite — is what buys both strength and corrosion resistance at once. A 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum, nitrogen-enhanced chemistry gives a 450 MPa yield floor, so designers can halve wall thicknesses against 316L and still gain margin against chloride pitting and stress-corrosion cracking — the failure mode that retires austenitic grades in warm Gulf seawater.
The trade-off is discipline in the workshop: welding needs matched consumables and controlled heat input to keep the phase balance, and service above roughly 250–300 °C is off the table. Off-cuts from desalination and tank projects appear here as plate and pipe in serious sizes; every listing shows exact dimensions and price upfront.
When chlorides or strength drive the design — seawater-adjacent service, brine, tanks under load. The doubled yield often pays for itself in thinner sections, and the pitting resistance margin is real.
It welds well but not casually: over-alloyed filler (2209), controlled heat input and interpass temperature keep the austenite-ferrite balance. A qualified duplex procedure matters more than for austenitics.
Half the nickel keeps the alloy surcharge down, and double the strength halves the metal you need. Per kilogram it is comparable; per finished structure it frequently wins.
