Duplex stainless steel mixes austenitic and ferritic structures in one material — roughly twice the yield strength of 316L, with much better resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Grade 2205 is the workhorse, and most pieces here are certified surplus from UAE oil, gas and water projects.

The strength story is what sells duplex: because yield is about double that of 316L, designers specify thinner walls and lighter sections for the same duty. In the Gulf, that pairs with the chloride story — desalination, seawater cooling and produced-water service are exactly the environments duplex was built for.
Duplex is expensive at the mill and slow to source in small quantities, which makes certified surplus genuinely useful: project-grade material, already in the country, at off-cut prices. Welding needs a qualified procedure to keep the phase balance right — worth planning before you buy.

When strength or chlorides push 316L past its comfort zone — seawater systems, desalination plant, pressure parts you want thinner and lighter. For general architectural or food-contact work, 316L remains the economical choice.
Not hard, but particular: heat input and interpass temperature control the austenite–ferrite balance, so use a qualified procedure and matching consumables. Fabricators who work duplex regularly treat it as routine.
Mill orders carry minimum quantities and long lead times, and duplex prices make full plates a serious commitment. Surplus pieces already in the UAE close that gap for repairs, spools and small fabrications.
