Aluminium 5052 (AlMg2.5) is the standard marine-and-tank sheet alloy: 2.5% magnesium gives it the best fatigue strength and salt-water resistance of the common sheet grades, and it bends without complaint. Fuel tanks, panels, enclosures and boat parts are its home ground.

5052 belongs to the 5xxx magnesium series — alloys that get strength from chemistry and cold work rather than heat treatment, and in exchange stay stable, weldable and highly corrosion-resistant. In the common H32 temper it yields around 193 MPa, forms tighter bends than 6061 ever will, and shrugs off coastal air that stains lesser grades.
Its natural work is formed sheet metal: fuel and water tanks, electrical enclosures, chute liners, trailer skins, marine fittings. It TIG/MIG welds cleanly with 5356 filler. If your part is machined from thick plate rather than bent from sheet, look at 6061 instead — 5xxx alloys gum up cutters that 6xxx grades treat kindly.
Formability and fatigue: 5052 takes tight bends that crack 6061-T6, and it endures vibration better — which is why tanks and panels specify it. 6061's advantages (machining, structural temper) only matter in thicker sections.
Only the cold-work portion — the weld zone returns to roughly annealed strength, a milder penalty than the heat-treated 6xxx grades suffer. Weld with 5356 filler for matching corrosion behaviour.
It is among the best common alloys for it, resisting both general attack and pitting in salt water. Keep it isolated from copper and steel fasteners, or galvanic corrosion undoes the alloy's good behaviour.
