Aluminium 6082 off-cuts

Aluminium 6082 (AlSi1MgMn) is Europe's structural aluminium: the strongest of the common 6xxx alloys, reaching about 260 MPa yield in T6 plate, with the manganese addition improving toughness. Structural profiles, machined components and load-bearing frames on European-specified projects call it up by name.

Also listed as: AlSi1MgMn · EN AW-6082 · A96082 · 3.2315

6082 is what EN structural design codes assume: it replaced older alloys as the standard for stressed aluminium work across European practice, and Gulf projects drawn to EN standards inherit that. In plate it slightly out-muscles 6061; in extrusions it forms the beams, tees and channels of curtain walls, walkways, and equipment frames.

Workshop behaviour tracks its 6xxx family: machines cleanly, anodises well, loses temper strength in weld zones like every aged alloy, and prefers machining or bolting over tight cold bending. Off-cuts turn up as plate drops and profile ends from fabrication work — check the temper on the certificate, since T6 and the softer T4 handle very differently under load.

Common questions

Is 6082 interchangeable with 6061?

For most general work, yes — they are the European and American siblings of the same family, with 6082 slightly stronger in plate. Where a structural calculation names one, supply that one; the certificate settles it.

Why does European structural work specify 6082?

History and the design codes: EN standards for stressed aluminium structures are written around 6082's properties, so specifying it keeps the calculation and the certificate aligned.

How should 6082-T6 joints be designed?

Prefer bolting or riveting where the full temper strength matters; welds locally anneal the alloy to roughly half strength. Where welding is unavoidable, the codes provide reduced HAZ design values — use them.
