Brass off-cuts

Brass — the copper-zinc family — splits into two workshop staples: CuZn37 (CW508L) for forming and deep drawing, and CuZn39Pb3 (CW614N), the free-machining rod that turning shops run all day. Off-cut lengths and sheet remnants here suit exactly that kind of work.

The lead in CuZn39Pb3 is there for a reason: it breaks chips, which is why it remains the default for high-volume turned parts — fittings, valve components, inserts. CuZn37 keeps the zinc lower and the lead out, so it bends, spins and draws cleanly where the machining grade would crack.

Brass jobs are usually small — a batch of fittings, a trim piece, a bushing — so buying a short rod or a sheet remnant beats committing to mill quantities. Every listing carries the actual piece dimensions, and theoretical weight is computed from them.

Common questions

Which brass grade should I machine?

CuZn39Pb3 (CW614N) unless something rules it out — the lead addition breaks chips and gives the surface finish turning shops expect. It is the industry default for turned brass parts.

Can I bend or deep-draw machining brass?

Not reliably — the lead that helps machining hurts formability. For bending, spinning and drawing, use CuZn37 (CW508L).

How is the weight on a listing calculated?

Theoretically, from the declared dimensions and the alloy's density — the same method mills and stockists use. What you see on the listing is what you are quoted against.
