ASTM A36 carbon steel off-cuts

A36 is the American general-purpose structural steel: minimum 250 MPa (36 ksi) yield, readily weldable, supplied as plate, angles, channels and beams. In the UAE it lives alongside its European counterpart S275JR — for most brackets, frames and base plates the two are interchangeable.

Also listed as: ASTM A36 / A36M · ≈ S275JR (EN) · SS400 (JIS, near)

A36 is the plate a workshop reaches for when the drawing says "mild steel" and means it: machine bases, gussets, frames, packers, general site steel. Its chemistry is loose by design, which keeps it cheap and weldable with any common process — no preheat at ordinary thicknesses, no exotic consumables.

Projects on American specifications (oil & gas packages especially) call up A36 by name, while local structural work leans on EN grades. If your job is dual-spec, check the certificate: much regional plate is certified to both A36 and S275JR and satisfies either callout.

Common questions

Can I use A36 where the drawing calls for S275JR?

Structurally the grades are close — A36's 250 MPa floor sits just under S275's 275 MPa. Substitution needs the engineer's sign-off, and dual-certified plate makes the question disappear.

Is A36 suitable for machining?

It machines acceptably but is not a free-cutting grade — for shafts and turned parts a medium-carbon grade like EN8 gives a better finish. A36's territory is cut, welded and bolted fabrication.

Does A36 need painting in the UAE climate?

Yes — like all plain carbon steel it rusts, and coastal humidity accelerates it. Blast and prime for anything exposed; inland, dry indoor structures survive with lighter coatings.
