GRADE GUIDE · S235JR

S235JR structural steel off-cuts

S235JR is the everyday mild steel of EN 10025-2: 235 MPa minimum yield, weldable with anything, bendable cold, and the grade behind most light fabrication, railings, frames and general workshop steel in the UAE.

Also listed as: EN 10025-2 · 1.0038 · St37-2 (old DIN) · ≈ A283 Gr.C

The name decodes simply: S for structural, 235 for the yield floor in MPa at ≤16 mm, JR for a 27 J impact test at room temperature. It is the gentlest of the structural family — easiest to bend, punch and weld — which makes it the default for non-critical work: gates, frames, brackets, platforms, temporary works.

Its price advantage over S275/S355 is modest, so the real reason to pick S235 off-cuts is fit: light-gauge sheet, small angles and hollow sections turn up in this grade more than any other. For load-bearing design where section sizes are pinched, step up to S275JR or S355JR and save weight instead.

Common questions

Is S235JR the same as St37?

Effectively yes — St37-2 is the old DIN name for the same steel, and Gulf yards still use both. Certificates issued today read S235JR to EN 10025-2.

Can S235JR be galvanised?

Yes, it hot-dip galvanises well. As with any silicon-bearing steel the coating thickness varies with chemistry; the galvaniser reads the certificate, which each badged listing releases after purchase.

When should I pay for S355 instead?

When the design is strength-governed — beams, lifting frames, anything where a 50% higher yield lets you use a smaller section. For stiffness- or fit-governed work, S235 is usually enough.
