Special steel off-cuts

Special steel covers the grades that don't fit the ordinary families: tool steels like D2, H13 and O1, abrasion-resistant plate in the 400 and 500 HB classes, and spring or high-carbon grades. Everything here is identified surplus — sold against a declared grade and condition, never as mystery metal.

Stock turns over piece by piece — what's listed is what exists. Post the spec you need and we match it against incoming material; you're alerted the moment something lands.

Tool steels are bought in small, expensive pieces by nature — a die blank, a punch, a mould insert — which makes off-cut stock unusually well matched to how the material is actually consumed. D2 covers cold-work dies, H13 hot-work and die-casting, O1 the general-purpose oil-hardening jobs.

Wear plate is the other pillar: 400 and 500 HB abrasion-resistant grades for chutes, liners, buckets and crusher wear parts. These jobs are patch-sized more often than plate-sized, so a remnant with declared hardness class and dimensions does the work of a full plate at a fraction of the outlay.

Common questions

Is this scrap-grade material?

No. Every piece is identified surplus with a declared grade, dimensions and condition — off-cuts and remnants from fabricators and toolrooms, not mixed scrap. Where a mill certificate exists, the listing carries the MTC badge.

What condition are tool steel pieces in?

Usually annealed — the machinable state tool steel is supplied in, hardened after machining. The listing states the declared condition; check it before planning your heat treatment.

Can wear plate be cut to my patch size?

Yes — cutting is available as a service, and you approve the final cutting instruction before any torch touches the piece. Note that 400/500 HB plate is cut with plasma or waterjet, not sheared.
