GRADE GUIDE · A106
A106 is the seamless carbon steel pipe specification for high-temperature service — the standard line pipe of refineries, power plants and process skids, almost always encountered as Grade B with a 240 MPa yield minimum. Because it must be seamless, an A106 off-cut is a genuinely certified pressure-pipe remnant, not generic tube.

Most process piping in the Gulf is A106 Gr.B: steam, condensate, fuel gas, hydrocarbon lines running hot. The specification demands seamless manufacture and tight chemistry, so the material carries real traceability — schedule, heat number and mill certificate. Off-cut lengths suit exactly the jobs that generate them: spool repairs, nozzle stubs, tie-ins measured in centimetres rather than in 6-metre joints.
Buying surplus here needs three numbers checked, and every listing shows them: outside diameter, schedule (wall), and length. A516-style plate rules do not apply — pipe wall is the pressure boundary, so never substitute a lighter schedule than the line class calls for.
A106 is seamless-only with tighter chemistry, rated for high-temperature service; A53 permits welded (ERW) manufacture and covers ordinary air, water and steam duty. Where a line class says A106, A53 ERW is not a substitute.
SA106 is the ASME boiler-code adoption of the same specification. Material certified SA106 meets A106; code work (pressure vessels, power piping) requires the SA certificate.
Yes — pipework is joined from cut lengths as a matter of course. What matters is the certificate, the schedule matching the line class, and your welder's qualification, not the length of the piece.
